Important Tips To Improve Photogrammetry Scanning Quality


Photogrammetry can be easily defined as the measurement of photos. It is a process that largely depends on camera positioning around the given theme and light control to produce high-resolution details of skin and clothing. Scanning can be used to capture data for various projects, including Face Replacement and CG characters. With so many variables to control, photogrammetry scanning can be overwhelming. There is simply too much trial and error involved to achieve best practices, but with a few helpful tips, it is very possible to achieve accuracy and top quality with the process.

Tip 1 - Think of an overlapping cover. When you set up your setup, you should use as many cameras as you can to reduce or minimize manual cleaning later. Sufficient coverage translated into very decent recovery and you will also seldom miss the information if you use enough cameras so that manual cleaning is very minimal.

Tip 2 - Use measures to minimize distortion. If there are distortions, your system will have problems that will align the images. The fact that most photogrammetry systems come with a lens that helps reduce images but it is always a much better choice to try and minimize it in camera. Use tools that match the camera format that you use to get the best results every time.

Tip 3 - Masking the background to dramatically improve the overall quality of the generated mesh and post-processing time. It is a process that can be time-consuming, especially if you have to go through every single picture, but it pays off in the end. If manual masking is something you'd rather avoid, then you can provide systems that feature automatic masking to achieve a clean background. It also helps to bind cables together and eliminate all junk from the frame, especially when a camera rig.

Tip 4 - Focus on more resolution during operation. You can use as much as necessary of your sensor as the more the resolution you can achieve, the more detailed your mesh becomes. Try not to waste a single pixel any way you can actually use it for quality.

Tip 5 - Keep in mind that lighting remains the key to all types of photography. To increase the depth of the file and eliminate the noise, keep the aperture small and ISO as low as you can. But because doing this will definitely reduce the amount of light that you have to work with, make sure you replace other light sources. Consider the use of flashes over continuous lighting, which are less efficient, less color accurate and expensive for that matter. Lightning keeping talent comfortable and sufficiently lit, unlike continuous lamps, the heat can leave closed rig hot.

Tip 6 - Look for the photo orientation. It is a factor that plays a large part in the accuracy of projects and it must be accurate for each camera position. Increase the number of well positioned points to improve the orientation quality. These points should occupy a larger proportion of the photo area.
